Resources for Children

State Programs

State of Virginia programs called FAMIS and FAMIS PLUS cover dental services for low income families. Please visit the website for Cover Virginia for more information.

Local Dentists

Many private practice dentists in the New River Valley accept Medicaid/FAMIS. If your children are covered by these programs, a high percentage of local dentists will accept them as patients. Please check when you call to make an appointment.

Community Health Center of the NRV

The CHCNRV opened January 2014 in the former Free Clinic building at 215 Roanoke Street in Christiansburg.  They have one full-time and one part-time dentist who see children, and they accept Medicaid/FAMIS. Visit their website or call 540-381-0820 for information on how to enroll in this program.

Carilion Pediatric Dental Clinics

Call the clinic at 540-224-4380 any day for emergencies.  For non-emergencies, call on the first business day of each month beginning at 8:00 am, because most appointments for the month are filled by 8:30 am that day. The Clinic can often make special arrangements with community partner organizations when transportation to the dental clinic is guaranteed by the partnering organization. The organization should call the Clinic manager at 540-981-7480 to discuss this option.

Head Start or Child Health Investment Partnership (CHIP)

If your child is enrolled in Head Start or CHIP, ask the program director for information on other resources to address your child’s dental needs. You may also want to check with your local school nurse or Head Start program to see if a dental clinic is scheduled.
