Dental Aid NRV serves the counties of Montgomery, Floyd, Giles, and Pulaski and the City of Radford, including Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Riner, Radford, Floyd, and Pulaski, Virginia.
In 2009, Joe and Margot Thompson, founders of Thompson Tire, established the nonprofit Dental Aid Partners of the New River Valley, in collaboration with the Community Foundation of the New River Valley. With the help of a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of active and retired dentists and dental professionals, as well as concerned and caring citizens, we pursue our mission in several ways.
Part of our mission is to educate New River Valley residents about the importance of dental health. We execute a number of activities in support of this, primarily focused on children. We provide every first grader in the NRV with a dental kit containing a children’s toothbrush, paste, and floss. We supply dental teaching aids for elementary school instructors as well as additional toothbrushes and paste for school nurses. We offer and conduct dental screening for elementary schools and provide posters that can be placed on walls warning about excessive consumption of sugary drinks. Our plan is to help create good dental habits in children who may not get this reinforcement in their homes. Our hope is that, over the years, we will begin to break the cycle of low prioritization of dental care by too many of our NRV neighbors. Hence, our tagline, teeth are for life.
The second part of our mission is to facilitate dental care for our neighbors least able to afford it. To that end, we previously established our Dental Aid Day (DAD) Clinics, with volunteer dentists treating qualified patients. In 2018, we established a partnership with the Community Health Center of the New River Valley to facilitate dental care for financially eligible adults.
In 2017, we shortened our name to Dental Aid NRV to more clearly define our work.
